Sizing things up
I was criticised in an earlier blog for taking an ‘inappropriate’ position on nanotechnology and hiding behind the EU – when in fact I was merely pointing out that it was a new technology that would need discussing in the food context. Clearly, such a development would be discussed with our European colleagues too.
The EU is now considering an update to what is widely known as the ‘novel food regulation’, which is the area of legislation that covers new developments such as cloning and nanotechnology. The FSA is consulting widely on the legislative proposal so I’d urge those of you with an interest in these areas to contribute.
And for those of you who feel they’re not quite up to speed on the topic yet, while I was away the other week, The Guardian had an update on food and nanotechnology. Also, of course, the work the Agency has already done on the subject is on our website so you can see where we’re at. Comments welcome…
