Folic acid (continued)

I was interested to read details of research in The Lancet showing the benefits of folic acid, not least because of the consultation we’re currently running, which includes an option to introduce mandatory fortification of flour with folic acid.

The study concludes that folic acid benefits the cognitive health of older adults. The participants were randomly chosen either to receive folic acid supplements (800 micrograms a day), or a placebo, for three years. Memory and the ability to process information – which, as we know, usually deteriorate as we get older – were significantly better in the group that received folic acid, compared with the group that received the placebo.

At the end of last year, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) concluded that, overall, the evidence for either beneficial or harmful effects of folic acid on cognitive function in older people is inconclusive at the moment. Although The Lancet study adds to the evidence, by itself it isn’t enough to change SACN’s overall conclusion. We need to see if results from further trials confirm these findings.

The FSA already advises women who are pregnant, or trying to conceive, to take folic acid, to reduce the risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect such as spina bifida.

The FSA’s consultation focuses on increasing the folic acid intakes of young women but, of course, if mandatory fortification of flour were introduced in the UK – as it has been in a number of other countries – it wouldn’t only be young women who would be consuming the added folic acid. So it’s important to weigh up the interests of different population groups. If you would like to find out more and have your say on the different options, take a look at the consultation and read my earlier blog posting on this topic.

Folic acid

I have to totally agree with the previous respondent.

There are 2 key points here:

1 Personal responsibiloty for managing your own health - and that of your unborn child.
2. Choice.

I do not think that mass medication of a whole population is the best way to ensure that mothers to be have a healthy baby - they are responsible for their own actions.

I have made my views known throughout the consulation as someone who has a personal interest - I take Folic Acid as an essential medication and it appears from all the research that no one knows what effect it will have on me and thousands of others in the same position. As the research suggests 'overall, the evidence for harmful effects of folic acid is inconclusive at the moment'. On this point alone I cannot see how anyone can believe its a good idea to go ahead and medicate the whole country.

What choices does this decision leave the majority of the population with?

For 46 years I have been one of the silent majority - no longer - please lets leave some decisions to common sense and personal responsibility. Why should the whole country have to put up with a nanny state for the few who can't get themselves organised.

Folic Acid

Here are some points of view against the proposed enforced mass medication:

* People should be able to make a choice about whether they eat products with added folic acid or not - to "mass medicate" all bread flour does not permit freedom-of-choice

* Enforced mass medication is a violation of our human rights

* People who want to consume additional folic acid can do so through food supplements or by eating natural foods containing folic acid

* There should be no "enforced mass medication" - adding folic acid can be compared with the proposed fluoridation of water - in both cases there are dubious "benefits" and well-known side-effects

* The "target group" for this is a small percentage of the population: pregnant mothers. Why should others be forced to take the medication which is intended only for this small group?

* Folic acid can mask vitamin B12 deficiency in older people

* Folic acid can cause complications with anti-convulsant drugs for epileptics

* This time it is proposed to add folic acid. What will it be next time? "Soma" from "Brave New World"?
